Hallux Valgus Surgery

Hallux valgus, also known as a bunion, is an outward deviation of the big toe that can be caused by factors such as heredity, wearing high-heeled shoes with narrow toes, or even age. In fact, hallux valgus is most often painful when the deformity becomes significant.

And when medical care becomes insufficient, the solution is surgery to restore the alignment of the joint of the bones of the big toe by eliminating the angle of deviation and the bunion.

WHY HAVE Bunion Surgery?

Hallux valgus is an inflammatory condition affecting the big toe that requires surgery.

This foot surgery is recommended to treat large portions of the joint surface that have been destroyed by cartilage wear and to eliminate long-term pain.

THE BENEFIT OF A CONSULTATION BEFORE HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY:

The importance of the preoperative consultation lies in determining the extent of the hallux valgus as well as the discomfort it causes in the patient's daily life.

Treatment may include pain medication, podiatry and, most often, surgery, before which the surgeon will examine the patient's feet while they are standing, lying down and walking.

The clinical preoperative examination is sometimes supplemented by a podoscope examination: a device consisting of a thick window, a lighting device and a mirror placed at the bottom of the device.

The patient stands on the glass to exert pressure on certain parts of his foot to visualize the imprint of his foot and also to identify areas of abnormal support, particularly the forefoot.

An X-ray assessment is necessary and includes images of both feet to quantify the extent of the deviation and the impact of hallux valgus on the bones and joints of the foot.

HOW IS HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY PERFORMED?

The surgeon uses a minimally invasive surgery technique by making short incisions to reestablish the axis of the big toe, by very slightly shaving the bony bump because the deformity is particularly linked to a misalignment of the bones.

Next, the first metatarsal bone and the first phalanx bone are cut. The new position of the bones is stabilized with a special bandage that acts as a splint.

Most often, no hardware is used in the foot such as screws or staples unless there is poor bone quality or instability.

Typically, hallux valgus surgery is performed under general anesthesia, can last between 15 and 45 minutes and only requires outpatient hospitalization in the clinic.

WHAT SCARS ARE LEFT AFTER HALLUX VALGUS SURGERY?

Hallux valgus healing occurs gradually.

The healing time after hallux valgus surgery varies from one patient to another: often, the skin heals from the 3rd or 4th week following the operation.
