Joint prostheses

A worn joint in the hip, elbow, shoulder, or knee often causes significant discomfort and disabling effects on daily life, such as pain or difficulty walking. The solution is to opt for an artificial joint.

Joint prostheses allow the replacement of a joint that is severely damaged due to osteoarthritis with a joint made of synthetic material to improve the patient's daily comfort: reduce pain and restore mobility.

WHY USE JOINT PROSTHESES?

In orthopedic surgery, the implantation of joint prostheses is recommended to replace, in part or in full, a joint that has become particularly worn.

These are artificial joints that have the same shape as the original joint and are made up of a set of synthetic mechanical parts.

In reality, the surgical indication is not based on a single criterion, particularly on the radiographic image, because the concordances between wear and pain are not systematic.

With this in mind, the doctor assesses the parameters relating to the condition of the joint (its clinical appearance, imaging and various measuring instruments) and the intensity of the pain.

It should be emphasized that there is no minimum value in terms of pain or also in terms of function from which arthroplasty is recommended.

This solution is most often very effective in terms of pain relief. It can relieve between 80 and 95% of osteoarthritis pain. Regarding the improvement of mobility, it varies depending on the type of prosthesis used.

Generally, the placement of the joint prosthesis allows you to benefit from a significant increase in mobility with a better quality of life.

THE BENEFIT OF A CONSULTATION BEFORE JOINT PROSTHESIS OPERATION

The preoperative consultation is an important phase in the decision-making process to implant a joint prosthesis based on the patient's expectations and preferences.

The preoperative assessment includes an interview to analyze the functional complaint, pain, autonomy permitted by the pathology and the patient's own expectations, medical history and living conditions,

Determine general risk factors such as patient age, cardiovascular and peripheral vascular status, diabetes, obesity or smoking,

The search for comorbidities – osteoporosis, depression, cancer or diabetes,

A physical examination and assessment of functional impairment,

A radiological assessment,

A search for infectious foci.

HOW IS JOINT PROSTHESIS IMPLANTATION PERFORMED?

Joint prosthesis implantation surgery lasts between 1 and 2 hours on average.

The surgeon proceeds by removing damaged cartilage and bone before placing a metal implant on the ends of the bones in the area to be treated.

The prosthesis has a spacer that allows for easier passage between the metal parts and also facilitates the movement of the new joint.

WHAT SCARS ARE THERE AFTER JOINT PROSTHESIS IMPLANTATION?

The scar is anterior and measures between 10 and 15 cm in extension.

The surgeon performs minimally invasive surgery as soon as possible to reduce scarring.
